The buzz around this method for treating sunburns can be traced back to this Facebook post by Cindi Allen Stewart, who claims to have been using this method for success for about 10 years, after learning it from her mother-in-law.

For this method you'll need a shaving cream that:

a.) comes out as foam, and

b.) has menthol in its formula.

You can use any brand, but you may find out that some brands work better than others for this purpose.

How to Treat a Sunburn with Shaving Cream

The steps to follow are very simple:

  1. Wash carefully the area with cool water.
  2. Apply the shaving cream on your burn, don't rub it just let it rest on your skin.  You may feel itching, this is a normal occurrence and a sign that your skin has started to heal.
  3. Leave the shaving cream on your skin for 30 minutes.  It should feel cooler.
  4. Rinse the area using cool water.  Don't use hot water as this can add further inflammation.
  5. If needed, repeat the steps the following day until you notice an improvement.  For most sunburns a couple of days should be enough and you should feel considerably better from the first one.

Yes! What's great about this method is that it really works and is 100% safe provided you follow the directions exactly.

Of course, it doesn't replace the better strategy against sunburns: prevention!  Before thinking about sunburn solutions you should think about protecting your skin by using a high SPF sunscreen and limiting your time under the sun.

The original method uses Gillette's Shaving Foam with menthol, but you can use any other brand with similar ingredients.

The secret of this method lies in the menthol.  This is an ingredient that is often used in shaving creams to soothe the effects of shaving on our skin.

Does it work for everyone?  Well, this all depends on your type of skin and the reaction you have to the additional ingredients on the formula.  Although the menthol will always provide a cooling effect, some brands of shaving cream contain other ingredients that can cause irritation on some types of skin.  A sunburn is basically damaged skin and you don't want to put irritating ingredients on it, you just want to cool the skin and trap the moisture to help heal it faster.

If you constantly have to deal with sunburns, especially during summer, this might be a good alternative to try.  And if it doesn't work for you at least you have have your daily shaving needs covered!  Let us know if this solution worked for you!
